Adjournment debate: Nigeria’s major educational challenges

Bob Blackman MPOn the 20th March an adjournment debate was held in the House of Commons to discuss how Nigeria is addressing its major educational challenges, particularly education for girls and community involvement in education. The debate was called by Bob Blackman MP, who along with Mark Williams MP and Helen Grant MP, was part of a delegation of UK parliamentarians from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Global Education for All which visited Nigeria in February. (RESULTS provides a part-time secretariat for the APPG, working closely with the Global Campaign for Education UK). The delegation visited schools in the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos, and also met with Nigerian politicians, school governing bodies and saw the impact of British aid on the ground. Nigeria has 10% of the world’s children of primary age who are not in school (an estimated 8.5 million, the largest number of any country in the world), the majority being girls. Continue reading

MPs speak up for education in Nigeria

Following a roundtable meeting on ‘Engaging the community in delivering education for all: the case of Nigeria’ held by the APPGs on Global Education for All and on Nigeria in December, three MPs have tabled parliamentary questions asking the government about their support to education in Nigeria.

Nigeria has the largest number of out of school children of any country in the world – over 8 million according to the latest figures. The UK Department for International Development currently provides support to education in Nigeria through the ‘Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria’ (ESSPIN), which is largely managed through NGOs. There is a big focus on girls’ education, which is a particular issue in large areas of northern Nigeria, and the programme also aims to increase community participation in education. On Tuesday RESULTS joined with other members of the Global Campaign for Education to host a presentation on ’1GOAL: Education for All’ in the Houses of Parliament. We were privileged to be joined by Gary and Danielle Lineker, who are ambassadors for the 1GOAL campaign. The event, which was designed to stimulate interest in the campaign among parliamentarians and to raise the profile of a new All-Party Group on Education for All that we are currently working to establish, attracted a record number of Members of Parliament.
